In teaching English as a second language, she starts with the basics and builds on the strengths that kids have, Gorman said. Sometimes their families speak Spanish or another language at home, so it is vital to help them speak, read and write in English so they can become functional citizens, she said.

Some were able to make academic progress, while others learned the importance of good work habits, and they saw an improvement in their state test scores overall.

When teaching ELL, she must always think about the backgrounds of the students and their individual needs, she said. She must consider what they might not have experienced and their families' experiences and socio economic status.

Stacey Gorman committed to kids
In 1999, she moved to Fort Morgan, teaching first and second grades at Columbine Elementary School. In fact, a homework club at Columbine inspired the Academic Opportunity Center, she said.
Given the current population of Fort Morgan schools, which has a majority of Hispanic kids some who have not spoken English before many kids have a need for ELL, Gorman said.
"It's always an adventure," Gorman said.
She said she learned that she liked working with this population of students, and wanted to help them.
